Claude+Outlook
Claude and Outlook: Setup, Attachments and Fixes
How to turn on Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector and the Claude for Outlook add-in, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to have every attachment saved, named and filed for you.
The short answer
Claude reaches Outlook two ways: Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector, for work and school accounts, and the Claude for Outlook add-in, a beta that sits in Outlook's ribbon. The connector searches and reads mail and, once an admin enables writes, sends and drafts, but it refuses messages with attachments. The add-in drafts replies and reads Word and Excel attachments, and never sends. Neither saves attachments to a folder; a Drive AI workflow files each one as it arrives, from work or personal Outlook.
Set up
How to connect Claude to Outlook
An admin approves the connector
A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator consents once for the organization, from Claude's connector settings or with Anthropic's admin consent link.
The owner adds it and turns on writes
On Team or Enterprise, an owner adds Microsoft 365 in Organization settings, Connectors. Sending and drafting stay off until the owner enables write tools.
Connect your work account
Customize, Connectors, Microsoft 365, Connect, with a work or school account. In a chat, switch it on from the + menu under Connectors.
Or install the Outlook add-in
Claude for Outlook (beta, Pro and above) installs from Microsoft AppSource and opens from the Claude button in the message ribbon. An admin can deploy it under Integrated apps in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
What it does
What Claude's Outlook connector can and cannot do
It can
- Search and read mail, including the Archive folder and shared mailboxes you can open
- Send, draft and reply, and manage rules and automatic replies, once an admin enables writes
- Read calendars, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint through the same connector
- In the add-in: triage the inbox, summarize threads and draft replies left for you to send
- In the add-in: read Word and Excel attachments
It cannot
- Connect a personal Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live account
- Send, forward or draft a message with attachments: the connector refuses them
- Read PDF attachments in the add-in; save the file and upload it instead
- Save an attachment to OneDrive or SharePoint
- Send anything from the add-in, which only drafts
Troubleshooting
Claude's Outlook connector not working?
"Need admin approval" or "an administrator must approve"
The tenant has not consented yet. A Global Administrator consents once for the organization; for the add-in, the admin also grants its Microsoft Graph permissions.
Claude reads mail but cannot send or draft
Writes are off by default. An owner turns them on in Organization settings, Connectors, Microsoft 365. If your tenant consented before write tools existed, a Global or Application Administrator re-runs the admin consent link: reconnecting does not add permissions.
"Messages with attachments cannot be forwarded"
That is a limit of the connector, not an error: its write tools refuse anything with attachments. Forward it from Outlook yourself, or have a workflow save the attachment where it belongs.
Sign-in blocked: AADSTS53003, AADSTS70043 or AADSTS53000
Conditional Access is blocking the connector, which signs in from Anthropic's servers (160.79.104.0/21). Exclude that range from location and sign-in frequency policies; device compliance policies are supported.
The add-in will not deploy for an admin
Deployment is reported failing for admin roles activated through Privileged Identity Management. Anthropic's add-in documentation points to Microsoft tracking ID 11126536; use a permanently assigned admin role meanwhile.

Where it stops, and what The Drive AI adds
Claude's connector works with the messages. Getting each attachment out of the inbox and into the right folder is a workflow, which runs on every email as it arrives.
| Job | Claude's connector | With The Drive AI |
|---|---|---|
| Save every attachment to OneDrive | No tool for it. | A workflow saves each attachment as the email arrives. |
| Read a PDF attached to an email | Not in the connector; the add-in reads Word and Excel only. | Each attachment is read on arrival, and what it says decides where it goes. |
| Personal Outlook.com | Not supported. | Supported, along with Microsoft 365 accounts. |
| Name and file attachments by vendor or client | No. | Renamed from its contents and filed where it belongs, in OneDrive, SharePoint or another drive. |
| Triage mail and draft replies | Yes. | No. The Drive AI handles attachments, not mail. Keep Claude for that. |
Set it up once
It sits beside Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector and the Claude for Outlook add-in rather than replacing it. Connecting Outlook to The Drive AI comes with Max and Team; files in The Drive AI workspace work on every plan.

Prompts for Outlook
When an email with an attachment arrives in Outlook, save each attachment to OneDrive, rename it date-first from what it says, and file it in a folder for its document type.
Every attachment ends up named and filed without anyone opening the email.
When an invoice arrives as an Outlook attachment, read the vendor, number and total off it, rename it date-first, and file it in SharePoint under Invoices by vendor.
Invoices are filed by vendor in the team library the moment they arrive.
When a signed contract arrives as an Outlook attachment, ask someone on the legal team to approve it before it is filed in OneDrive under Contracts by counterparty.
A person checks each contract once, before it joins the record.
FAQ
Common questions
Checked against the publishers' documentation and the connector's own tool list on 2026-10-16. Sources:
Can Claude read Outlook attachments?
The Claude for Outlook add-in reads Word and Excel attachments, but not PDFs. Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector does not say it reads attachment contents, and its write tools refuse messages with attachments.
Does Claude work with personal Outlook.com accounts?
No. The Microsoft 365 connector needs a work or school account, and the add-in needs Microsoft 365. The Drive AI connects personal Outlook.com for filing attachments.
Can Claude send emails from Outlook?
Through the Microsoft 365 connector, once an admin enables write tools, but never with attachments. The Outlook add-in drafts replies for you to send and never sends on its own.
What is the difference between the Claude Outlook add-in and the connector?
The add-in works inside Outlook on the message you are reading. The connector works from a Claude chat across your mail, calendar, Teams and files. They are set up separately.
Every attachment, filed as it arrives.
Describe it once and a workflow saves, renames and files each attachment in the drive you choose. Build it here, or ask for it from Claude with The Drive AI connector added.
