How to watermark a PDF

How do you watermark a PDF?

Open the PDF in the watermark tool above, type your text (CONFIDENTIAL is filled in), pick Small, Medium or Large and Light, Medium or Strong opacity, check the preview, and click Watermark & Download. The text is stamped in grey, diagonally across the middle of every page, and the file never leaves your browser.

Questions answered

Can a watermark be removed from a PDF?

Yes, by someone determined. The watermark is real text drawn onto each page, not a flattened image, so a full PDF editor can select and delete it. It works as a clear label and a deterrent against casual reuse, not as protection. To control who can open a file, use a password or restricted sharing.

Is the watermark applied to every page?

Yes. The same text, size and opacity go on every page, running diagonally across the middle, whatever the page size. There is no option to skip pages; to watermark only some, pull them out with Split PDF, watermark that file, and combine the parts again with Merge PDFs in the order you want.

Can I use an image, logo or another font?

Not yet. The tool stamps text only, in grey bold Helvetica, so for branding type your company name. Because Helvetica is one of the standard PDF fonts, the text must use Latin characters: Western European accents work, but Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic or emoji text will fail with an error when you apply it.

Does a watermark reduce the quality of the PDF?

No. The tool adds one line of text on top of each page and saves the file; the existing text, images and fonts are not re-encoded or re-compressed. The file grows only slightly, and the original text underneath the watermark stays selectable and searchable in any viewer.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The watermark is drawn onto the pages in this browser tab with the pdf-lib library, and the preview is rendered on your device with PDF.js. The watermarked file is saved straight to your downloads, and nothing is sent to The Drive AI or any other server.
