Claude and OneDrive: Setup, Limits and Fixes
How to turn on Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to give Claude batch changes with undo across every drive.
The short answer
Claude reaches OneDrive through Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector, which works with work and school accounts only: personal OneDrive (outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com) is not supported. A Microsoft 365 admin approves it once for the organization, then you connect under Customize, Connectors. It reads OneDrive and SharePoint files and, once an admin turns on write tools, creates and changes them one item at a time. For personal OneDrive, or for batch changes with undo, add The Drive AI as a second connector.

How to connect Claude to OneDrive
An admin approves it once
A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator consents for the whole organization, either from Claude (Customize, Connectors, Microsoft 365, Connect, then tick consent on behalf of the organization) or with Anthropic's admin consent link.
Team or Enterprise: the owner adds it
An owner adds Microsoft 365 in Organization settings, Connectors. The connector is read-only until the owner turns on its write tools there.
Connect your work account
Go to Customize, Connectors, Microsoft 365, Connect, and sign in with your work or school Microsoft account. Personal Microsoft accounts are refused.
Turn it on in a chat
Open the + menu in the message box, choose Connectors and switch on Microsoft 365. Once connected it also works in the Claude mobile apps.
What it does
What Claude's OneDrive connector can and cannot do
It can
- Search OneDrive and SharePoint by content, file name, author, type, folder or date
- Read Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files, and text files such as CSV and Markdown
- Create folders, and upload or replace files up to 1 MB
- Rename, move within the same drive, copy (including to another drive), and delete to the recycle bin
- Read Outlook mail and calendar and Teams chats as well, through the same connector
It cannot
- Connect a personal Microsoft account: OneDrive Personal is not supported
- Upload or rewrite anything over 1 MB, or read OneNote notebooks
- Create sharing links or change who has access
- Move between drives in one step: it copies, then deletes the original
- Change more than one item per action, or undo a change
- Find duplicates, or reach Google Drive or Dropbox in the same request
Troubleshooting
Claude's OneDrive connector not working?
"Personal Microsoft accounts can't be used to connect"
Anthropic's connector only accepts work or school accounts on a Microsoft Entra tenant. There is no setting that changes this. For a personal OneDrive, attach files to the chat directly, or connect the OneDrive to The Drive AI, which works with personal accounts, and reach it from Claude through The Drive AI connector.
"Need admin approval" or "an administrator must grant app permissions"
Your tenant has not approved the connector yet. A Global Administrator consents once for the organization, from Claude's connector settings with "consent on behalf of organization" ticked, or by opening Anthropic's admin consent link. After that, members connect without seeing the screen again.
Claude reads files but cannot create, move or delete them
The connector is read-only by default; an owner turns on write tools in Organization settings, Connectors, Microsoft 365. If your tenant consented before write tools existed, a Global or Application Administrator has to run the admin consent link again: reconnecting does not add the new permissions, because Microsoft does not show the consent screen twice.
Sign-in blocked: AADSTS53003, AADSTS70043 or AADSTS53000
A Conditional Access policy is stopping the connector. Location and sign-in frequency policies are not supported, because requests come from Anthropic's servers (160.79.104.0/21): exclude that range from those policies. A compliant-device policy is supported; reconnect from a compliant device.
Claude cannot find a file you know is there
It only sees files in OneDrive or SharePoint, not ones only on your computer, and recently uploaded files take a while to be indexed. Name the file or the site exactly. OneNote notebooks cannot be read; export them to Word or PDF.
Microsoft 365 is missing, or shows no tools, in Claude Code
Microsoft 365 cannot be connected from inside Claude Code. Connect it at claude.ai under Customize, Connectors, then sign in to Claude Code with the same claude.ai account. Users report it showing no tools in Claude Code while working in Claude Desktop (open GitHub issue, September 2026).

Where it stops, and what The Drive AI adds
Claude's connector works one change at a time. For a whole folder, a whole drive, or more than one drive, ask The Drive AI directly, or add it to Claude as a second connector.

Add The Drive AI to Claude
It sits beside Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector rather than replacing it. Connecting OneDrive to The Drive AI comes with Max and Team; files in The Drive AI workspace work on every plan.

Prompts for OneDrive
In my OneDrive, find files nobody has changed since before 2023 and propose moving them into an Archive folder, by year. Leave everything in Documents/Current alone.
Old files get out of the way as one change you can check and reverse, not thousands of moves.
What is taking up the most space in my OneDrive? List the biggest folders and any file over 500 MB.
Every folder is measured at once, and nothing changes until you decide what goes.
Move my OneDrive Photos folder into Google Drive under Photos, keeping the folder structure. Check each copy before removing anything from OneDrive.

Can Claude access OneDrive?
Yes, for work and school accounts, through Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector. It searches and reads OneDrive and SharePoint files and, once an admin enables write tools, creates folders and uploads, renames, moves, copies and deletes files.
Does Claude work with personal OneDrive?
Not through Anthropic's connector, which refuses personal Microsoft accounts such as outlook.com and hotmail.com. The Drive AI connects personal OneDrive accounts, and its connector makes them reachable from Claude.
Which Claude plans include the Microsoft 365 connector?
All of them: Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Every plan needs a work or school Microsoft account and a one-time approval from your Microsoft 365 administrator.
How do I check what the connector is allowed to do?
Ask Claude to test your Microsoft 365 connection. The connector lists the permissions Microsoft has granted it for your account, or the AADSTS error code and trace ID your administrator can look up if Microsoft is refusing it.
Can I limit Claude to certain SharePoint sites?
No. The connector needs tenant-wide read access to sites, and Microsoft's per-site permission is not supported, so search covers everything your account can open. Admins can limit which people may use it.
