Gemini vs Copilot vs ChatGPT vs Claude for Organizing Files
TL;DR: In 2026 three of the big four can now change your files, not just read them. Gemini suggests folder moves in My Drive. ChatGPT and Claude can move, share and trash Google Drive files from a chat, asking before each action. Copilot suggests better names in OneDrive but doesn't file anything. None of them previews a large batch as one change and undoes it as one, covers Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint and Dropbox from one place, or keeps filing new files by itself. That is the gap a file agent fills.
A year ago this comparison would have been short. Every assistant could read your documents and none of them could put one away.
Since then, Google, OpenAI and Anthropic have all given their assistants write access to Google Drive, and Microsoft has started on OneDrive. The features are new, they change monthly, and most comparisons you'll find are already out of date. This one is based on each vendor's own documentation as of October 4, 2026, plus independent tests where we cite them.
A disclosure: we make The Drive AI, a file agent, which is included at the end for comparison. The four assistants are described as their makers describe them.

What can Gemini do with your files?
Gemini's Organize My Files, generally available since June 1, 2026, looks at loose files in My Drive and suggests where they should go: into folders you already have, or into new folders it proposes. Nothing moves until you tick the suggestions and approve. (Google Workspace Updates)
Strengths: it learns from your existing folder habits, it reads PDFs, Office files, images and videos with transcripts, and it comes with Workspace Business Standard and up, and with Google AI Pro.
Limits: it doesn't rename files, reviewers found it doesn't cover shared drives, and it runs only when you open it. For automatic filing, Google added a Move Drive file step to Workspace Studio in September 2026, which you configure yourself.

What can Copilot do with OneDrive files?
Copilot in OneDrive is mostly a reader and a namer.
Copilot Suggested Rename, rolling out to OneDrive on the web from June 2026, offers three descriptive names for a file you've just uploaded, based on what's in it. You pick one or keep the original. It's a useful habit-builder for new uploads. It does nothing for the files already there.
Agents in OneDrive answer questions across files you pick, "up to 20 files," and Microsoft is explicit that they're for questions and summaries, not for moving or organizing. They need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license on a work or school account. (Microsoft Support)
As of October 2026, Copilot doesn't move files into folders or reorganize OneDrive or SharePoint. More in can Microsoft Copilot organize your OneDrive files.
What can ChatGPT do with Google Drive?
ChatGPT's Google Drive app gained write actions in 2026. OpenAI's documentation says Drive actions can "create, update, share, move, upload, copy, or delete" files, using your own Google permissions, and that ChatGPT may ask you to confirm an action first. In Business and Enterprise workspaces, admins have to turn write actions on. (OpenAI Help Center)
Strengths: it understands documents well and can do a file step in the middle of a broader task, such as drafting a summary and saving it into the right folder.
Limits: changes happen one action at a time, with no preview of a whole batch and no undo for one. Other clouds are separate apps, if they're available at all.
What can Claude do with Google Drive?
Claude's Google Drive connector can search, read, create, share, move and trash files and edit Docs, Sheets and Slides. Anthropic says that "by default, Claude asks for your approval before each of these actions." (Claude Help Center)
Strengths: strong reading and careful renaming. An independent test found its content-based names accurate, and it can fix dates in filenames that don't match the document.
Limits: the same test saw moves fail in a shared drive and naming differ between sessions. (Filently) Approving every action becomes the bottleneck on a large job.
Full breakdown: can Claude organize your Google Drive.
What do all four have in common?
Look past the feature lists and the same three things are missing.
One change, not a thousand actions. Assistants that move files do it one action at a time, each approved or none approved. A real reorganization is hundreds or thousands of moves. You want to see them together, with the count, a sample and any name collisions, and approve once.
An undo for the whole job. When a batch goes wrong, the fix should be one click, not a conversation trying to remember where 400 files came from.
One place for every drive. Most companies have files in at least two clouds. Each assistant is strongest in its own ecosystem and reaches others, if at all, through separate connectors with separate abilities.
There's a fourth, quieter gap: filing that keeps happening. Organizing once is a cleanup. Staying organized means every new attachment, scan and upload is filed the same way, by the same naming convention, without anyone asking.
Where does a file agent fit?
A file agent is built around those gaps rather than around a chat.
The Drive AI's agent sees Google Drive (including shared drives), OneDrive, SharePoint and Dropbox in one folder tree, alongside its own workspace. It changes files in place, and every request becomes one changeset:
- Preview the whole batch. The count, a sample of rows, conflicts and a risk level. Up to 20 harmless changes apply on their own by default. Larger ones wait for one approval, and very large ones ask you to confirm the number.
- Run big jobs in the background. Up to 50,000 operations in one change, with progress you can check and resume if interrupted.
- Undo the whole change in one click. Moves, renames, edits and trashed files are reversed, and the preview says up front where a drive doesn't allow a full undo.
- Keep your conventions. Workspace rules and saved notes mean the tenth run names files the same way as the first.
- Keep filing new files. Workflows handle new files from Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Teams and the connected drives as they arrive.
It also works from inside ChatGPT and Claude through MCP, so you don't have to pick one or the other.
The honest trade-offs: on connected drives it finds files by name, type, date and words in the text, not by meaning. It won't move a file from one cloud to another. And connected drives need the Max plan or any Team plan.
Which should you use?
- Tidying your own My Drive now and then: Gemini's Organize My Files, if your plan includes it.
- Better names for new OneDrive uploads: Copilot Suggested Rename.
- A few file actions inside a broader chat: ChatGPT or Claude, with confirmations on.
- Reorganizing thousands of files, shared drives, or more than one cloud: a file agent with batch preview and undo.
- Keeping things organized as files keep arriving: workflows, not a chat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which AI can organize my files automatically?
Gemini can file loose My Drive files through Workspace Studio flows you build, and file agents like The Drive AI run workflows that read, rename and file new documents across Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, Dropbox and email. Chat assistants like ChatGPT and Claude organize files when you ask, rather than continuously.
Can ChatGPT move files in Google Drive?
Yes. OpenAI's documentation says the Google Drive app can create, update, share, move, copy and delete files using your Google permissions. In Business and Enterprise workspaces, an admin must enable write actions first.
Can Copilot organize OneDrive?
Not as of October 2026. Copilot can suggest names for newly uploaded files and answer questions about up to 20 files through OneDrive agents, but it doesn't move files into folders.
Is Gemini or Claude better for organizing Google Drive?
They do different jobs. Gemini suggests folder moves for loose files in My Drive and doesn't rename. Claude moves and renames on request, one approved action at a time. For large or shared-drive jobs, neither offers a batch preview or a batch undo.
Can any AI undo a bulk file reorganization?
Gemini offers a brief undo right after its moves. A file agent with changesets, such as The Drive AI, can undo a whole reorganization later, as one action. Native drive tools also help: OneDrive's Restore your OneDrive and Dropbox Rewind roll back whole folders or accounts.
Check the date on any comparison
This field changes monthly, including this page. Before you choose, test the job you actually have, ideally on a copy of a real messy folder, and look at three things: whether you see the whole change before it happens, whether you can take it back afterwards, and whether the tenth run will look like the first.
