Can Gemini Organize Google Drive? What It Does and Skips

TL;DR: Yes, partly. Google Drive's Organize My Files feature, generally available since June 1, 2026, has Gemini suggest where loose files in My Drive should go, into existing folders or new ones, and moves them once you approve. It doesn't rename files, it runs only when you open it, and it works on drive.google.com in English on eligible Workspace and Google AI plans. For automatic moves, Google added a Move step to Workspace Studio in September 2026.

Google spent most of 2025 adding Gemini to Drive as a reader. It could summarize a document, answer questions about a folder, and help you find things. It couldn't put anything away.

That changed in 2026, so a lot of older advice, including "Gemini won't move your files", is now out of date. Here is what Gemini actually does to your Drive today and where it stops.

What does Organize My Files do in Google Drive?

Organize My Files is a Gemini feature that suggests where to move loose files in My Drive and then moves the ones you approve. Google describes it as Gemini providing "suggestions of where to move loose files based on your organizing structure." (Google Workspace Updates)

You open it from a Suggest File Moves entry point in My Drive or in a folder. The suggestions come in two groups:

  • Moves into folders you already have. Gemini matches a file to the folder it most likely belongs in.
  • New folders for related files. Gemini proposes a folder and a name for files that have no home yet.

You can untick suggestions, change a destination, and rename a proposed folder before you approve. Google's help page says plainly that "Gemini will not move any files without your permission." (Google Drive Help)

It reads PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Microsoft Office files, images, and videos with transcripts, and it uses your existing folder habits as a guide. If you reject a suggestion, Gemini won't suggest that file and folder pair again for 30 days.

Who can use Gemini to organize Drive?

Organize My Files is available on drive.google.com in English, on these plans:

  • Google Workspace Business Standard and Business Plus
  • Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus
  • Google AI Pro and Ultra for personal accounts
  • Google AI Pro for Education and AI Expanded Access

You need Editor access to the files it moves. It isn't in the Drive mobile apps.

Can you undo a Gemini file move?

Yes, briefly. After the move, a confirmation appears at the bottom of the screen with an Undo button. Google notes one catch: "New folders will not be deleted when you undo a move to prevent potential data loss." So an undo puts the files back but leaves the folders Gemini created, empty, for you to remove.

Once that confirmation is gone, Drive has no undo for a batch. You'd use the Activity panel to see where each file was and move them back by hand. The options are covered in how to undo a bulk move in Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox.

What doesn't Gemini do when organizing Drive?

Four gaps matter for most people.

It doesn't rename files

A file called Scan_0042.pdf keeps that name after it moves into /Insurance/2026. Folders help, but names are half of finding things again. An independent review summed it up as "the file keeps its original name." (Filently)

It only runs when you open it

Organize My Files is a cleanup you start, not a rule that applies to new files. Every new download, scan and attachment lands loose until the next time you remember to run it.

It's built for My Drive

Google's announcement describes it as working within My Drive and its folders. Reviewers found that shared drives, where team files usually live, aren't covered. (Filently)

It only knows Google Drive

If your company also keeps files in SharePoint or Dropbox, Gemini can't help there, and it can't give one answer across all of them.

What about Workspace Studio's Move step?

For filing that happens without you, Google added Drive steps to Workspace Studio (formerly Flows). They began rolling out on September 8, 2026, and include "Move Drive file or folder" and "Copy Drive file or folder." (Google Workspace Updates)

That closes the "only when you remember" gap for teams on Workspace. You build the flow yourself, it moves files based on criteria you set, and admins can require approval when a step might share data outside the organization. Renaming still isn't one of the steps.

When is Gemini enough, and when do you need more?

Gemini is a good fit if your files are in your own My Drive, you're on an eligible plan, and you want an occasional tidy with suggestions you review. It costs nothing extra on those plans and needs no setup.

You'll need more if any of these apply:

  • Names matter. You want Invoice Acme 2026-03-14.pdf, not Scan_0042.pdf.
  • The mess is in a shared drive.
  • You have thousands of files to reorganize and want one preview, a background run and an undo for the whole batch.
  • Files are in more than one cloud.
  • You want new files filed as they arrive, with renaming, from Gmail, Outlook, Slack or Teams as well as Drive.

That is what The Drive AI does. Its agent moves and renames files in place in Google Drive, including shared drives, as well as OneDrive, SharePoint and Dropbox. It previews each change as one batch and undoes the whole batch in one click, and its workflows file new files as they land. Connected drives need the Max plan or any Team plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Gemini organize my Google Drive?

Yes. Organize My Files suggests where loose files in My Drive should go, into existing folders or new ones, and moves the files you approve. It doesn't rename files and only runs when you open it.

Does Gemini rename files in Google Drive?

Not as part of Organize My Files. Files keep their original names after Gemini moves them. Renaming by content needs a separate tool.

Does Gemini organize shared drives?

Not at launch. Google describes Organize My Files as working in My Drive, and reviewers found shared drives weren't covered.

Is Gemini file organization free?

It's included with Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google AI Pro and Ultra. It isn't on Business Starter or free personal accounts.

How do I undo a move Gemini made?

Click Undo in the confirmation at the bottom of the screen right after the move. New folders Gemini created stay behind. After the confirmation disappears, you have to move files back by hand using the Activity panel.

Try both on the same folder

If you're on an eligible plan, run Suggest File Moves on a messy folder in My Drive and note what it gets right. Then ask The Drive AI to organize the same folder and rename the files, and compare the two previews. Whichever one you'd trust to run next month without you is the right one.
