See What Is Taking Up Space in Dropbox

Dropbox says you are out of space. It does not say where the space went, and scrolling folder by folder sorted by size is not how anyone wants to spend an evening.

The short answer

Connect Dropbox to The Drive AI and ask what is filling it: it measures every folder, then lists the largest folders and files and how old they are. When you decide what goes, it proposes trashing it as one change and waits for your confirmation. Trashed files stay in Dropbox's trash for the retention period of your Dropbox plan, and undo brings them back.

Ask it

What you type, and what comes back

What is taking up the most space in my Dropbox? List the biggest folders and any file over 500 MB, then propose trashing the videos nobody has changed since 2022. Do not delete anything until I say so.

Ask The Drive AI
New conversation

Ask for anything to do with the files in Dropbox.

It looks before it acts, shows every change before or as it happens, and can undo what it did.

The real assistant, doing this job on sample files. Approve it, then try Undo.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Measure

Measures every folder by size, type and age

  2. 2

    List

Lists files over 500 MB, and videos unchanged since 2022

  3. 3

    Propose

    Proposes trashing those videos

  4. 4

    Confirm

Trashes them only once you confirm

What comes back

Dropbox: 1.94 TB used.

Camera Uploads ....... 1.21 TB

Projects/Video ....... 412 GB

Backups/Old Mac ...... 188 GB

37 files over 500 MB. 22 are videos unchanged since 2022 (96 GB).

Plan: trash those 22 videos. Trashing waits for you. Say go to apply.

An example run. Measuring and listing change nothing; only the last step does, and only when you confirm.

What it needs

From Claude or ChatGPT

Prefer to stay in Claude or ChatGPT? Add The Drive AI as a connector, then paste the same prompt. Without it, neither has a way to reach these drives as a batch.

Claude.ai and Claude Desktop

Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, then paste the server URL. Connectors are on your account, so the desktop app gets it too.

ChatGPT

Plugins → + → Add custom MCP server, then paste the server URL and sign in. Changing files from ChatGPT needs a Business or Enterprise workspace, where an admin publishes the server; on Pro, custom servers can only read.

Dropbox, connected in The Drive AI

The job runs on your Dropbox where the files already are, so that account is connected in The Drive AI first. Working in connected drives comes with Max and Team. Files you keep in The Drive AI workspace work on any plan.

What asks first, and what can be undone

Reading and searching change nothing. By default, up to 20 moves, renames or new folders apply at once; anything larger, and anything that trashes, edits or moves a file between drives, comes back as a preview with counts and samples for you to confirm. An applied change is undone as a whole with one request. Moves and renames reverse as long as the file has not changed since; trashed files come back from Google Drive, personal OneDrive and Dropbox, and from work OneDrive or SharePoint only where an admin has allowed restores.

Then ask

Follow-up prompts

Are any of those files duplicated elsewhere in my Dropbox?

Identical copies are the safest thing to remove: one stays, so nothing is lost.

Move Backups/Old Mac into my Google Drive instead of trashing it.

If you have room in another connected drive, moving is an alternative to deleting.

Undo the last change.

Brings the trashed videos back from Dropbox's trash.

Tips and limits

It does not empty the Dropbox trash

The Drive AI moves files to the trash and no further. Emptying it, or deleting a file permanently, is done in Dropbox itself, which keeps the last step yours.

Start with duplicates and old backups

Identical copies and old computer backups are usually the largest things nobody needs. Clear those first, then decide about photos and videos.

Shared folders count against everyone

A file in a folder shared with you can also count against your space. Trashing it there removes it for the other people in that folder too, so check the paths in the preview.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I see what is taking up space in Dropbox?

Dropbox shows sizes folder by folder. To see everything at once, connect Dropbox to The Drive AI and ask it to measure the account: it lists your largest folders and files with their size and age, without changing anything.

Does it delete files from Dropbox?

It moves them to the Dropbox trash, as one change you confirm first. It does not empty the trash or delete files permanently.

Can I get trashed files back?

Yes. Ask to undo the change, or restore them in Dropbox. Files stay in Dropbox's trash for 30 days or longer, depending on your Dropbox plan.

Ask it here, or from Claude or ChatGPT.

The same sentence works in The Drive AI, and in Claude or ChatGPT with our connector. Either way, a large change comes back as a preview for you to confirm, and anything applied can be undone as a whole.
