The short answer
ChatGPT connects to SharePoint through OpenAI's SharePoint app in two ways: a live connection each person makes under Plugins, and, on eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an admin-managed sync that indexes chosen sites. A Microsoft admin approves the permissions once. It searches, summarizes and compares files, and where enabled creates folders, uploads and updates files, manages sharing links, and works with lists and pages. It does not list moving, renaming or deleting files. To archive or reorganize a library as one change with undo, ask The Drive AI directly.

How to connect ChatGPT to SharePoint
Live: connect in Plugins
Each person opens Plugins, finds SharePoint, connects and signs in with a work or school account. ChatGPT searches at question time and keeps no index of its own.
Approve the permissions
A Microsoft Entra admin approves the permission set once. Live search needs Sites.Read.All and Files.Read.All; per-site permission (Sites.Selected) is not supported for it.
Sync: an admin sets up indexed search
On eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an admin opens the admin console, Plugins, SharePoint, Indexed search, Set up. One sync per workspace; the first index can take hours.
Enable the actions
Microsoft consent does not switch on ChatGPT actions. A workspace admin enables SharePoint and chooses which actions, such as uploads or sharing links, members may use.

- Index files over 100 MB, or files with Purview encryption or access-restricting labels, in sync
- Undo a set of changes, or reach Google Drive and Dropbox in the same change
Troubleshooting
ChatGPT's SharePoint connector not working?
"ChatGPT needs permission to access resources in your organization that only an admin can grant"
An Entra admin has to approve the permission request for the tenant. After that a ChatGPT workspace admin enables SharePoint, and each person reconnects.
A site is missing even though it is on the allowlist
The site allowlist and deny list work on site collection IDs, not URLs, so a CSV of site URLs adds nothing, and an uploaded CSV only changes the draft until you save. An empty allowlist means no restriction.
Restricted sites still show up in answers
Site restrictions apply only to the indexed sync connection. A person's own live connection still reaches everything their account can open, and site restrictions do not restrict OneDrive.
Sync stopped working after April 2026
On April 30, 2026 sync moved to Microsoft application permissions. An Entra admin approves the new permissions, then the workspace owner reconnects under Workspace settings, Apps, Reconnect SharePoint.
A file the person can open is not found
Check that the same Microsoft account opens it in SharePoint, that its type and size are supported for sync, that its site is in the sync scope, that no sensitivity label excludes it, and allow time after permission changes.
