Claude and Google Drive: Setup, Limits and Fixes
How to turn on Anthropic's Google Drive connector, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to give Claude batch changes with undo across every drive.
The short answer
Claude connects to Google Drive through Anthropic's own Google Drive connector: in a chat, open the + menu, choose Connectors, turn on Google Drive and sign in with Google. It can search and read your files and, since August 2026, create folders, upload, copy, rename, move, share and trash them, asking before each change by default. It changes one file per action and has no undo. For a whole folder or more than one drive, add The Drive AI as a second connector, which proposes the batch as one change and undoes it as one.

How to connect Claude to Google Drive
Turn it on in a chat
Open the + menu in the message box, choose Connectors, switch on Google Drive and sign in with your Google account. Connectors are switched on per conversation.
Team or Enterprise: the owner enables it
An owner turns the connector on in Organization settings, Connectors, and sets each tool to Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked. Members then connect their own Google accounts.
Workspace accounts: trust the app
If Google says your admin needs to review Claude, a Google Workspace admin marks Claude for Google Drive as Trusted under Security, Access and data control, API controls, Manage third-party app access.
Desktop and Claude Code get it too
Connectors live on your Claude account, so Claude Desktop has it, and Claude Code loads it when you are signed in with a claude.ai account rather than an API key.

What Claude's Google Drive connector can and cannot do
It can
- Search Drive by title, text, file type, date, owner or folder
- Read Google Docs, Sheets and Slides (with comments), PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and images
- Create folders and blank Docs, Sheets and Slides, and upload files
- Rename, move, copy and trash files
- Share a file with a person, group or Google Chat space as viewer, commenter or editor
- Show who a file is shared with
It cannot
- Change more than one file per action; each change asks for approval unless your admin allows otherwise
- Undo a change; moved files are moved back by hand and trashed ones restored from Drive's trash
- Remove someone's access or turn on an "anyone with the link" share
- Edit the text of an existing Google Doc (the separate Google Docs connector does that)
- Find duplicate files, or reach OneDrive, SharePoint or Dropbox in the same request
- Move files reliably in shared drives: users report permission errors there (open GitHub issue, October 2026)
Troubleshooting
Claude's Google Drive connector not working?
"Access blocked: your institution's admin needs to review Claude for Google Drive"
Your Google Workspace blocks third-party apps from Drive by default. A Workspace admin opens admin.google.com, then Security, Access and data control, API controls, Manage third-party app access, finds the Claude app and sets it to Trusted. Anthropic says to allow about 15 minutes; Google says changes can take up to 24 hours.
Google Drive is not in the Connectors list
On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner has to enable the connector in Organization settings first. If it is enabled but some actions never appear, the owner has set those tools to Blocked, which hides them from Claude entirely.
Connected, but Claude does not look in Drive
Connectors are switched on per conversation. Open the + menu in this chat, choose Connectors and make sure Google Drive is on. Mentioning Google Drive in the request also helps Claude reach for it.
Claude reads files but will not move, rename or trash them
Write actions arrived in August 2026. Check that your organization has not set those tools to Blocked, then disconnect and reconnect under Customize, Connectors, which is Anthropic's documented fix for connector errors. By default every change also waits for your approval in the chat.
Shared drive files are missing, or moves fail with "does not have permission"
Anthropic does not document shared drive support. Users report searches that skip shared drives and moves that fail with a permission error, while renames and new folders work. The usual workaround is to copy files into My Drive first. The Drive AI works in shared drives once an admin adds them, through each person's own Google account.
Google Drive is missing in Claude Code
Claude Code loads claude.ai connectors only when you are signed in with a claude.ai account. With ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, an auth token, Bedrock or Google Cloud they do not load, and ENABLE_CLAUDEAI_MCP_SERVERS=false turns them off. Run /mcp to see which servers came from claude.ai.

Where it stops, and what The Drive AI adds
Claude's connector works one change at a time. For a whole folder, a whole drive, or more than one drive, ask The Drive AI directly, or add it to Claude as a second connector.

It sits beside Anthropic's Google Drive connector rather than replacing it. Connecting Google Drive to The Drive AI comes with Max and Team; files in The Drive AI workspace work on every plan.

Does Claude have a Google Drive integration?
Yes. Anthropic's Google Drive connector lets Claude search, read, create, copy, rename, move, share and trash files in your Drive. You turn it on from the + menu in a chat under Connectors and sign in with Google.
Can Claude move and rename files in Google Drive?
Yes, since August 2026. It changes one file per action and, by default, asks for your approval before each one. Moves inside shared drives are reported to fail with a permission error.
Can Claude edit a Google Doc?
Not through the Drive connector, which can rename, move and describe a file but not change its text. Anthropic's separate Google Docs connector and the Claude for Google Workspace add-on edit document content.

Anthropic's help centre lists Google Workspace connectors as available to all Claude users. The August 2026 write actions were announced for paid plans, and Google's own documentation lists Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.

Is there an MCP server for Google Drive?
Several. Claude's built-in connector, Google's own Drive MCP server (a developer preview that needs your own Cloud project), community servers such as google_workspace_mcp that need your own OAuth client, and The Drive AI, which also covers OneDrive, SharePoint and Dropbox and undoes changes as a whole.
