Claude and SharePoint: Setup, Limits and Fixes

How to turn on Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to give Claude batch changes with undo across every drive.

The short answer

Claude reaches SharePoint through Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector. A Microsoft 365 admin approves it once, an owner adds it for the team, and each person connects with their work account. It searches every site the person can open, reads Office files and PDFs, and, once write tools are on, creates folders and uploads, renames, moves, copies and deletes items one at a time. For archiving or reorganizing a library as one change with undo, add The Drive AI as a second connector.

How to connect Claude to SharePoint

01

An admin approves it once

A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator consents for the organization, from Claude's connector settings or with Anthropic's admin consent link. To restrict who can use it, require assignment on both of its enterprise apps.

02

The owner adds it and chooses write access

On Team or Enterprise, an owner adds Microsoft 365 in Organization settings, Connectors. It is read-only until the owner turns on write tools, and each tool can be set to always allow, needs approval or blocked.

03

Connect your work account

Customize, Connectors, Microsoft 365, Connect, and sign in with your work or school account.

04

Turn it on in a chat

Open the + menu, choose Connectors and switch on Microsoft 365. Name the site or library in the request to point Claude at it.

What it does

What Claude's SharePoint connector can and cannot do

It can

  • Search SharePoint documents by content, name, author, type, folder or date, 50 results at a time
  • Find folders by name and list what is in them
  • Read Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files, and read SharePoint pages
  • Create folders, and upload or replace files up to 1 MB, keeping version history where the library has it
  • Rename, move within a library, copy across sites, and delete to the recycle bin

It cannot

  • Be limited to certain sites: search covers every site the person can open
  • Move between libraries or sites in one step: it copies, then deletes the original
  • Upload or rewrite anything over 1 MB
  • Create sharing links or change permissions
  • Change more than one item per action, or undo a change

Troubleshooting

Claude's SharePoint connector not working?

"Need admin approval" when connecting

The connector asks for tenant-wide permissions, so Microsoft routes it to an administrator. A Global Administrator consents once for the organization, and nobody sees the screen again. Our guide to the admin approval screen covers what the admin will check.

Claude can search SharePoint but not change anything

Write tools are off by default. An owner turns them on in Organization settings, Connectors, Microsoft 365. Tenants that consented before write tools launched must re-run the admin consent link, because reconnecting does not grant new permissions.

Moving a file to another site or library fails

The connector moves items only within the same drive, and a SharePoint library is its own drive. Across libraries or sites it copies the item, confirms the copy finished, and then deletes the original, one item at a time.

Upload fails for larger files

Uploads and replacements are limited to 1 MB per file, with no chunked upload. Larger files have to be uploaded in SharePoint itself.

Search returns files from sites you did not expect

The connector reads SharePoint tenant-wide through your account, and Microsoft's per-site permission is not supported, so it sees every site you can open. Name the site or folder in the request to narrow it.

Sign-in blocked by Conditional Access

Location and sign-in frequency policies block the connector, which calls Microsoft from Anthropic's servers (160.79.104.0/21). Exclude that range from those policies; keep device compliance policies, which are supported.

Where it stops, and what The Drive AI adds

Claude's connector works one change at a time. For a whole folder, a whole drive, or more than one drive, ask The Drive AI directly, or add it to Claude as a second connector.

Add The Drive AI to Claude

It sits beside Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector rather than replacing it. Connecting SharePoint to The Drive AI comes with Max and Team; files in The Drive AI workspace work on every plan.

New conversation

Ask for anything to do with the files in Contracts.

It looks before it acts, shows every change before or as it happens, and can undo what it did.

The Drive AI's assistant doing a SharePoint job on sample files, the same way it runs from Claude. Approve it, then try Undo.

In our SharePoint Projects library, find the project folders nobody has changed since before 2024 and propose moving them into an Archive folder, one subfolder per year. Show me the list before moving anything.

The archive is one change you check before it happens and can reverse after.

File every contract PDF in our SharePoint Contracts library into a folder named for the other party in the contract. Show me the plan first.

The agent reads each contract for the counterparty; you see every move before anything changes.

Which folders in our SharePoint Projects library have the most files, and how large is each one?

A measured outline of the library is where a cleanup starts. Nothing changes.

Does Claude integrate with SharePoint?

Yes, through Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector, on every Claude plan. It needs a work or school Microsoft account and a one-time approval from your Microsoft 365 administrator.

Can Claude edit or move SharePoint files?

Once an owner turns on write tools, yes: it creates folders, uploads or replaces files up to 1 MB, and renames, moves, copies and deletes items, one per action. Moves across libraries or sites are done as a copy and a delete.

Is there an official SharePoint skill or MCP server for Claude?

Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector is the official route. Microsoft has preview SharePoint and OneDrive MCP servers in Agent 365, which it now steers new projects away from, and community skills exist, but none of them is an Anthropic SharePoint skill.

Does The Drive AI need admin approval for SharePoint too?

Yes. Any app from outside Microsoft that reads SharePoint sites asks for a one-time admin consent. After that, an admin adds the libraries the workspace should see, and each person works in them through their own account.

One request for the whole drive.

Ask The Drive AI directly, or add it to Claude. Either way a large change comes back as a preview for you to confirm, and anything applied can be undone as a whole.
