ChatGPT and Outlook: Setup, Attachments and Fixes
How to turn on OpenAI's Outlook Email and Calendar apps for ChatGPT, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to have every attachment saved, named and filed for you.
The short answer
ChatGPT connects to Outlook through OpenAI's Outlook Email and Outlook Calendar apps in Plugins. Some actions need a Microsoft admin's consent, and a ChatGPT admin then turns actions on. It searches and reads mail, drafts and sends on the web, manages contacts and folders, works with shared mailboxes, and can list and fetch attachments in your own mailbox. OpenAI does not document saving attachments to OneDrive, and there is no OpenAI add-in inside Outlook. A Drive AI workflow files each attachment as it arrives.

How to connect ChatGPT to Outlook
Connect it in Plugins
Open Plugins, find Outlook Email (and Outlook Calendar if you want it), connect and sign in with your Microsoft account.
A Microsoft admin consents
The ChatGPT admin opens the admin console, Plugins, Configure Microsoft permissions, and an Entra admin accepts the whole request at once. The publisher shows as ChatGPT / OpenAI, L.L.C.
A ChatGPT admin enables actions
Consent alone does not switch anything on. The workspace admin enables the actions members may use, and members reconnect.
Shared mailboxes
Connect the account that already has access to the shared or delegated mailbox; ChatGPT works through that access.
What it does
What ChatGPT's Outlook connector can and cannot do
It can
- Search and read mail with filters, and look up people and contacts
- Draft and send on the web, and create or update contacts and folders when enabled
- Read shared mailboxes, move messages and send from them
- List and fetch attachments in your own mailbox
- Read, create and change calendar events, and check availability
It cannot
- Fetch attachments from shared or delegated mailboxes, only your own
- Save attachments to OneDrive or SharePoint: OpenAI does not document it
- Work inside Outlook: OpenAI publishes no Outlook add-in, and third-party "ChatGPT" add-ins are not OpenAI's
- Act before a Microsoft admin consents, where your tenant requires it
Troubleshooting
ChatGPT's Outlook connector not working?
"Need admin approval" when connecting
Your tenant has user consent turned off. A Microsoft Entra admin approves ChatGPT's permission request, which Microsoft shows as one Accept or Cancel.
An action fails after consent
Granting Microsoft permissions does not enable actions. The ChatGPT admin enables them under Actions; then reconnect so your connection picks them up.
Pop-up closes during admin approval
The Entra approval opens in a pop-up. Allow pop-ups for ChatGPT and run the approval again.
ChatGPT cannot find an email
Narrow the date range, use a distinctive sender or keyword, and split large requests. Answers about time zones also need the mailbox settings permission.

Where it stops, and what The Drive AI adds
ChatGPT's connector works with the messages. Getting each attachment out of the inbox and into the right folder is a workflow, which runs on every email as it arrives.
| Job | ChatGPT's connector | With The Drive AI |
|---|---|---|
| Save every attachment to OneDrive | Not documented. | A workflow saves each attachment as the email arrives. |
| Name and file attachments by vendor or client | No. | Renamed from what each one says and filed in OneDrive, SharePoint or another drive. |
| Draft replies and manage the calendar | Yes. | No. The Drive AI handles attachments, not mail. Keep ChatGPT's apps for that. |
Set it up once
It sits beside OpenAI's Outlook Email and Calendar apps for ChatGPT rather than replacing it. Connecting Outlook to The Drive AI comes with Max and Team; files in The Drive AI workspace work on every plan.

Prompts for Outlook
When an email with an attachment arrives in Outlook, save each attachment to OneDrive, rename it date-first from what it says, and file it in a folder for its document type.
Every attachment ends up named and filed without anyone opening the email.
When an invoice arrives as an Outlook attachment, read the vendor, number and total off it, rename it date-first, and file it in SharePoint under Invoices by vendor.
Invoices are filed by vendor in the team library the moment they arrive.
When a purchase order arrives as an Outlook attachment, read the customer and order number off it, and ask the sales team to approve before it is filed under that customer in OneDrive.
Orders are checked once and land in the customer's folder.
FAQ
Common questions
Checked against the publishers' documentation and the connector's own tool list on 2026-10-16. Sources:
Can ChatGPT connect to Outlook?
Yes, through OpenAI's Outlook Email and Outlook Calendar apps in Plugins. On many work tenants, a Microsoft admin consents first and a ChatGPT admin enables the actions.
Is there a ChatGPT add-in for Outlook?
Not from OpenAI, as of October 2026. Add-ins named ChatGPT on Microsoft AppSource come from third parties. OpenAI's Outlook support lives inside ChatGPT.
Can ChatGPT read Outlook attachments?
The Outlook Email app has actions to list and fetch attachments in your own mailbox, not in shared or delegated ones. Saving them to a drive is not documented.
Why is the ChatGPT Outlook connector not working?
Usually an action is not enabled, the Microsoft grant was removed, the connection needs refreshing, or pop-ups blocked the admin approval. Reconnect after any permission change.
Every attachment, filed as it arrives.
Describe it once and a workflow saves, renames and files each attachment in the drive you choose. Build it here, or ask for it from ChatGPT with The Drive AI connector added.
