Claude and Slack: Setup, Files and Fixes
How to turn on Slack's connector for Claude and Claude Tag, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to have every shared file saved, named and filed for you.
The short answer
Claude works with Slack two ways: Slack's connector for Claude, which searches and reads the channels, threads and DMs you can see and posts messages, and Claude Tag, Claude inside Slack itself for Team and Enterprise plans. Neither saves the files people share into a folder. A Drive AI workflow does: each file shared in a channel you choose is saved, renamed from what it says, and filed in the drive you pick.
Set up
How to connect Claude to Slack
Add the Slack connector
In Claude, open Customize, Connectors, choose Slack and sign in to your workspace. On Team and Enterprise, an owner enables it first.
A Slack admin approves it
Slack workspace admins approve and manage MCP client integrations. Without approval you see a request to install.
Or set up Claude Tag
On Team or Enterprise, a Claude owner sets up Claude Tag in admin settings and pairs the workspace by sending @Claude connect in Slack. People in channels do not need a Claude seat.
Know which Claude app you have
Slack says Claude Tag replaced the earlier Claude app in Slack from August 3, 2026. Older guides describe the previous app.
What it does
What Claude's Slack connector can and cannot do
It can
- Search messages and files, and read channels, threads and DMs you can access
- Post messages, and create and update canvases
- Claude Tag: answer in threads with the channel's history, and search the workspace
- Claude Tag: run code on files posted in a thread, such as charting a CSV
It cannot
- Download files shared in Slack through the connector
- Save shared files to Google Drive or any folder
- Claude Tag on Free, Pro or Max plans
- Claude Tag: post in Slack Connect channels, or search the workspace from channels with guests
Troubleshooting
Claude's Slack connector not working?
"Request to install" when connecting
Your Slack workspace requires admin approval for apps and MCP clients. A Slack admin approves it, then connect again.
Slack is not in Claude's Connectors
On a Team or Enterprise plan the owner has to enable it. Anthropic announced the connector for Pro and Max in January 2026, though its connector docs still say Team and Enterprise.
Claude Tag cannot see a channel or file
Each channel is granted its own connection. Ask "@Claude what can you access from this channel?" to see what it reaches there.
Claude Tag will not search the workspace in some channels
Workspace search is unavailable in channels that include guests. Ask from a channel without guests.
Bigger jobs
Where it stops, and what The Drive AI adds
Claude's connector works with the messages. Getting each shared file out of the channel and into the right folder is a workflow, which runs on every file as it is posted.
| Job | Claude's connector | With The Drive AI |
|---|---|---|
| Save every file shared in a channel | No tool for it. | A workflow saves each file as it is shared. |
| Name and file shared files by client | No. | Renamed from what each file says and filed under the right client or project. |
| Files shared in Microsoft Teams too | Slack only. | Slack and Teams channels, into any connected drive. |
| Answer questions in a Slack thread | Yes, with Claude Tag. | No. The Drive AI files what is shared; keep Claude Tag for the conversation. |
Set it up once
It sits beside Slack's connector for Claude and Claude Tag rather than replacing it. Connecting Slack to The Drive AI comes with Max and Team; files in The Drive AI workspace work on every plan.

Prompts for Slack
When someone shares a file in our #clients Slack channel, save a copy to Google Drive, read the client name off it, rename it date-first, and file it under that client.
Client files posted in Slack end up in the client's folder, named the same way every time.
When a file is shared in our #finance Slack channel, ask AI whether it is an invoice, a receipt or a contract, and file it in the matching folder in Dropbox.
Finance paperwork is sorted by kind as it is posted, instead of scrolling the channel later.
When someone shares a file in our #design Slack channel, save a copy to OneDrive under Design by month and send a message to #design saying where it went.
The team sees where each file landed without asking.
FAQ
Common questions
Checked against the publishers' documentation and the connector's own tool list on 2026-10-16. Sources:
Can Claude read files shared in Slack?
The connector searches Slack files but has no tool to download them. Claude Tag works with files posted in its thread, for example charting a CSV, inside its own sandbox.
What is the difference between the Slack connector and Claude Tag?
The connector brings Slack into a Claude chat: search, read and post. Claude Tag puts Claude inside Slack, answering in threads for everyone in a channel, and needs a Team or Enterprise plan.
Can Claude save Slack files to Google Drive?
Not through either of Anthropic's Slack integrations. A Drive AI workflow saves each file shared in the channels you choose to Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint or Dropbox.
Does Claude in Slack need a paid plan?
Claude Tag needs a Claude Team or Enterprise plan and works on every Slack plan. Slack's connector for Claude was announced for Pro and Max in January 2026.
Every shared file, filed as it lands.
Describe it once and a workflow saves, renames and files each shared file in the drive you choose. Build it here, or ask for it from Claude with The Drive AI connector added.
