Claude and Gmail: Setup, Attachments and Fixes
How to turn on Google's Gmail connector for Claude, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to have every attachment saved, named and filed for you.
The short answer
Claude connects to Gmail through a connector Google makes for it: open the + menu in a chat, choose Connectors, turn on Gmail and sign in with Google. It searches and reads mail, drafts, sends, replies and forwards (asking first by default), and manages labels and filters. It sees an attachment's name but not its contents, and cannot save an attachment to a folder. To have every attachment saved, renamed and filed in Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox as it arrives, a Drive AI workflow does that.

How to connect Claude to Gmail
Turn it on in a chat
Open the + menu, choose Connectors, switch on Gmail and sign in with the Google account to use. You can also connect it under Customize, Connectors.
Team or Enterprise: the owner enables it
An owner turns Gmail on in Organization settings, Connectors, and decides whether members may let sending run without asking each time.
Workspace accounts: trust the app
If Google says your admin needs to review Claude, a Google Workspace admin marks the Claude app as Trusted under Security, Access and data control, API controls.
Claude Code: connect it on claude.ai
Gmail cannot be added from inside Claude Code. Connect it at claude.ai, then sign in to Claude Code with that claude.ai account and it loads on its own.

Troubleshooting
Claude's Gmail connector not working?
"Access blocked: your institution's admin needs to review Claude"
Your Google Workspace blocks third-party apps by default. A Workspace admin opens admin.google.com, then Security, Access and data control, API controls, Manage third-party app access, and marks the Claude app as Trusted. Allow about 15 minutes.
"Please try again. You may need to reconnect"
Disconnect Gmail under Customize, Connectors and connect again. If it keeps failing, remove Claude at myaccount.google.com/connections first, then reconnect from Claude.
Connecting a second Gmail account replaced the first
The connector holds one Google account at a time, by third-party reports; Anthropic's docs refer to "the Google account you connected". Switch accounts by disconnecting and connecting the other one.

Remove the entry you added with claude mcp remove, connect Gmail at claude.ai instead, and sign in to Claude Code with the same claude.ai account. With an API key or a cloud provider configured, claude.ai connectors do not load at all.
Gmail is missing in Claude Code while Google Drive shows up
Users report this on open GitHub issues in 2026, even after reconnecting. Check /mcp and /status, sign in again with your claude.ai account, and use Gmail from claude.ai or Claude Desktop meanwhile.

Can Claude read Gmail attachments?
Not through the Gmail connector. Anthropic says it receives attachment details but not their content. Users save the attachment to Google Drive and have Claude read it there; a Drive AI workflow does that saving automatically for every email.
Can Claude send emails from Gmail?
Yes. Since August 2026 the Gmail connector can send, reply and forward, and by default it asks for your approval before each one. On Team and Enterprise plans, owners decide whether members may skip the approval.
Can I connect more than one Gmail account to Claude?
Not at the same time, according to third-party guides: connecting another account replaces the first. Anthropic's documentation refers to a single connected Google account.
Which Claude plans include the Gmail connector?
Anthropic's help centre lists Google Workspace connectors for all users, while its connector documentation lists Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and sending was announced for paid plans.
