ChatGPT and Gmail: Setup, Attachments and Fixes
How to turn on OpenAI's Gmail app for ChatGPT, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to have every attachment saved, named and filed for you.
The short answer
ChatGPT connects to Gmail through OpenAI's Gmail app: open Plugins, connect Gmail and sign in with Google, allowing every permission it asks for. It searches, reads and summarizes mail and, since June 2026, drafts and sends on the web after you approve. You can connect more than one Google account. OpenAI does not document reading attachment contents or saving attachments anywhere. To have every attachment saved, renamed and filed in Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox as it arrives, a Drive AI workflow does that.

How to connect ChatGPT to Gmail
Connect it in Plugins
Open Settings, Plugins (or Plugins in the sidebar), find Gmail, install it, choose Connect and sign in with Google. Free and Go can browse plugins but not use them.
Allow every permission
Choose Select all on Google's screen. Leaving boxes unticked ends in "ChatGPT needs all requested permissions".
Add more accounts if you need them
Settings, Plugins, Gmail, Connected accounts, Connect another account. With several connected, name the account in your request.
Work accounts: two admins
A ChatGPT workspace admin enables Gmail and its actions, and a Google Workspace admin approves the ChatGPT app's scopes. They are often different people.

Troubleshooting
ChatGPT's Gmail connector not working?
"Disabled by admin"
Either your ChatGPT workspace admin has not enabled Gmail or one of its actions, or your Google Workspace admin has not approved the scopes it needs. Ask both. On a personal account with no workspace, check your plan and region instead, then contact support.
"ChatGPT needs all requested permissions"
Choose Try again, then Select all on Google's screen. "Select fewer apps" connects fewer Google apps, but every permission for the ones you keep is still required.
It is connected but cannot find an email
Check that the email is in the account you connected, and with several accounts, name the account in the request. Start a new chat and say to use the connected Gmail app.
Authorization fails for a work account
Your Google Workspace admin has not approved the ChatGPT app's scopes. Once they approve, align the ChatGPT action settings and reconnect. Some Google errors do not say which scope was blocked.

Set it up once
It sits beside OpenAI's Gmail app for ChatGPT rather than replacing it. Connecting Gmail to The Drive AI comes with Max and Team; files in The Drive AI workspace work on every plan.

Plugins → + → Add custom MCP server, then paste the server URL and sign in. Changing files from ChatGPT needs a Business or Enterprise workspace, where an admin publishes the server; on Pro, custom servers can only read.

When an email with an attachment arrives in Gmail, save each attachment to my Google Drive, rename it date-first from what it says, and file it in a folder for its document type.
Every attachment ends up named and filed without anyone opening the email.
When a receipt arrives as a Gmail attachment, read the merchant, date and amount off it, rename it date-first, and file it in Dropbox under Receipts by month.
Receipts are ready for expenses or taxes without a monthly hunt through the inbox.
When an attachment arrives in Gmail, ask AI whether it is a contract, an invoice or something else, and file contracts and invoices in their own folders in OneDrive.
Paperwork that matters is pulled out of the inbox and the rest is left alone.

Can ChatGPT access my Gmail?
Yes. OpenAI's Gmail app lets ChatGPT search, read and summarize your mail, and draft and send emails on the web after you approve. Connect it under Plugins.
Why does ChatGPT say Gmail is disabled by admin?
A workspace admin has not enabled Gmail or one of its actions, or a Google Workspace admin has not approved the scopes it needs. Those are separate settings, often held by different people.
Can ChatGPT read Gmail attachments?
