What can I ask it to do?

Anything you would otherwise do to a file by hand: create a document from other documents, share a file with the right permission, send one for e-signature, merge or split PDFs, sort and rename a folder, or ask a question that spans thousands of files. It works in its own workspace and inside Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Dropbox.

What does it do without asking me?

Small changes apply at once, and you can undo them. Large changes, and anything sent to another person, wait for your OK and are shown as one plan first. Admins decide where that line sits for the whole workspace.

How does it answer a question across many files?

It reads the files by what they say, not what they are called. For a question that needs every file read, it tells you how many files and how long before it starts, and you can keep asking about what has been read while it runs.

What file types does it read?

PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images, scanned documents through OCR, audio through transcription, and video. If you can upload it, the assistant can read it.
