When I upload a photo of handwritten notes or a whiteboard, read the writing on it, rename the image by its date and what it covers, and file it with the course it belongs to.
Photograph the whole page, flat
OCR quality is mostly a function of the photograph. A flat page, filling the frame, in even light, reads far better than one taken at an angle in a dark lecture hall — and no amount of processing recovers what the photo did not capture.
Let it read the writing
The Read Details from File step runs OCR over the image and takes the topic from what is written, which is what lets the file be named by its subject rather than by a camera counter.
Name by date and topic
The Rename step writes both, so a folder of photographed notes reads like a set of notes rather than a camera roll.
File it with the typed material
The Move step puts it in the same course folder as the slides and readings. Handwritten notes are only useful next to the rest of the week's material, not in a folder of their own called Photos.
Handwriting quality is the limit, and it is worth knowing
OCR on printed text is close to solved. OCR on handwriting is not, and it depends on how the writing looks rather than how hard the software tries. Neat notes read well. Notes written at speed in the last four minutes of a lecture read badly, and a diagram with three words around it will never be findable by its text. Knowing this in advance is the difference between a useful tool and a false sense of security about material you only wrote down once.
Why the photo belongs with the typed notes
Material is revised by week, not by format. Putting photographs in their own folder means every revision session starts by reassembling a week from two places. Filing the photo into the course and week it belongs to means the whiteboard explanation sits next to the slides it was explaining, which is how it gets used.
What it does not do
It reads what is written and makes it findable. It does not transcribe a page into a clean document you can edit, redraw a diagram, or interpret notation it cannot resolve. If the original photograph is blurred or half in shadow, nothing downstream fixes that — the recoverable step is retaking the photo, which only works while you are still in the room.
