ChatGPT and Google Drive: Setup, Limits and Fixes
How to turn on OpenAI's Google Drive app for ChatGPT, what it can and cannot do, how to fix it when it stops working, and how to give ChatGPT batch changes with undo across every drive.
The short answer
ChatGPT connects to Google Drive through OpenAI's Google Drive app: open Plugins, find Google Drive, connect and sign in with Google, allowing every permission it asks for. It searches and reads Docs, Sheets, Slides and other files, and where your plan and workspace allow it, creates, updates, moves, shares and deletes them, asking you to confirm. Shared drives are not in its Library view yet, and personal sync has been retired. For a whole-Drive cleanup as one change with undo, ask The Drive AI directly.

How to connect ChatGPT to Google Drive
Open Plugins
In ChatGPT, open Settings, Plugins (or Plugins in the sidebar; older mobile apps still say Apps), find Google Drive, install it and choose Connect.
Allow every permission
Sign in with the Google account that holds the files and choose Select all on Google's screen. Leaving any box unticked ends in "ChatGPT needs all requested permissions".
Business or Enterprise: actions on
On Business, Drive actions are on by default. On Enterprise and Edu they stay off until an admin enables them under Workspace settings, Apps, Google Drive, Manage actions.
Google Workspace: trust the app
If sign-in is blocked, a Google Workspace admin approves the ChatGPT app's Drive scopes under Security, Access and data control, API controls.

- Show shared drives in Library: OpenAI says they are not included yet
- Change files during deep research, which only reads
- Sync your Drive for indexed search on a personal account: that sync was retired
- Undo a set of changes as one, or find duplicate files
- Move files from Google Drive into Dropbox or OneDrive
Troubleshooting
ChatGPT's Google Drive connector not working?
"ChatGPT needs all requested permissions" or "All permissions are required"
Google's consent screen was submitted with some permissions unticked. Choose Try again and then Select all, or Reconnect from Plugins, Google Drive.
Sign-in blocked, or you can read a file but not change it
Your Google Workspace admin has not approved the scopes that action needs. They approve the ChatGPT app under API controls, or your ChatGPT admin turns that action off so it stops failing. OpenAI notes that Google sometimes fails before telling ChatGPT which scope was blocked.
Google Drive is not in Plugins
Availability depends on your plan, your country and your workspace settings. In a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin may have disabled the app or limited which account domains can connect.
It says connected but does nothing, or "The Google_Drive tool has been disabled"
Start a new chat, choose Google Drive in it, and ask for one specific task. Users reported Drive tools failing at runtime in September and October 2026 (OpenAI community threads); OpenAI's advice is a fresh chat, then support if it persists.
"Sync failed", or your old Drive sync is gone
Sync set up from a personal account was retired and cannot be reconnected. Indexed sync now exists only as an admin-managed workspace connection. For admin sync, the ChatGPT email must match the Google Workspace email.
A file in a shared drive cannot be found
Library covers My Drive and files shared directly with you, not shared drives. Copy the file into My Drive, or ask your admin to include the shared drive in a workspace sync.

ChatGPT's connector works one change at a time. For a whole folder, a whole drive, or more than one drive, ask The Drive AI directly, or add it to ChatGPT as a second connector.

It sits beside OpenAI's Google Drive app for ChatGPT rather than replacing it. Connecting Google Drive to The Drive AI comes with Max and Team; files in The Drive AI workspace work on every plan.

Plugins → + → Add custom MCP server, then paste the server URL and sign in. Changing files from ChatGPT needs a Business or Enterprise workspace, where an admin publishes the server; on Pro, custom servers can only read.

Can ChatGPT access Google Drive?
Yes. OpenAI's Google Drive app lets ChatGPT search and read your Drive, and use Docs, Sheets and Slides in a chat. Connect it under Plugins and sign in with Google.
Can ChatGPT move or edit files in Google Drive?
Where your plan and workspace allow it, yes: OpenAI lists creating, updating, moving, sharing and deleting, and ChatGPT may ask you to confirm. Enterprise and Edu admins have to turn these actions on.
