# Google Drive Storage Full? How to Free Up Space Fast

> **TL;DR:** Your Google storage is one 15 GB allowance shared by Drive, Gmail and Google Photos, so Drive can be "full" while your Drive looks nearly empty. Open **Storage** in Drive to see your files from largest to smallest, then check Gmail attachments, Photos, the trash in all three, backups and hidden app data. Trashed files keep counting until the trash is emptied, so empty it last, after you are sure.

Disclosure: The Drive AI publishes this guide and makes a file agent that can find large files in a connected Google Drive. Every Google step below was read from Google's own help pages in October 2026, and the built-in fix comes first because it is usually enough.

## Why is my Google Drive storage full?

Because Drive is not the only thing using it. Google says each account includes up to 15 GB "shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos." Gmail messages and attachments (including Spam and Trash), photos and videos backed up to Google Photos, and files in Drive all count. A large inbox or photo library can fill the allowance on its own. ([Google One Help](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/9312312?hl=en))

Three more things catch people out:

- **The trash still counts.** Google: "Files in your Trash still count towards your storage until they are permanently deleted." ([Google Drive Help](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375102?hl=en))
- **Only files you own count.** A file someone shared with you uses their storage, not yours. A file you uploaded into a colleague's folder uses yours. ([Google Drive Help](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/6374270?hl=en))
- **Photos count whatever the quality.** Both Original quality and Storage saver backups count. Only Storage saver (then called High quality) or Express backups made before June 1, 2021 are exempt. ([Google Photos Help](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6220791?hl=en))

## What is taking up space on Google Drive?

Drive has a built-in list of your files by size. Google's steps: on the left-hand menu, click **Storage**, and "your files automatically list from largest to smallest." That page answers "what takes up the most space on Google Drive" for Drive itself. For the split between Drive, Gmail and Photos, open the storage page at [one.google.com/storage/management](https://one.google.com/storage/management). ([Google Drive Help](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/6374270?hl=en))

That second page is Google One's storage manager. Google describes it as free for anyone with a Google Account, covering Gmail, Drive and Photos, and built to "identify storage hogs and clean up space": large files, photos and videos, and emails. You do not need a paid plan to use it. ([Google One](https://one.google.com/about/articles/maximize-cloud-storage-with-google-one))

Look at the breakdown before you delete anything. If Gmail holds most of the space, clearing Drive will not fix it.

## Why is Google Drive storage full but no files are there?

When Drive says it is full but looks empty, the space is somewhere the Drive file list does not show. Check these in order: Gmail, Google Photos, the trash in each of the three, device backups, hidden app data, and files you own that sit outside your My Drive. Each has a different fix.

| Where the space hides | How to see it | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail attachments | Search `has:attachment larger:10M` | Google Drive Help |
| Google Photos | Storage page breakdown | Google One Help |
| Trash in Drive, Gmail, Photos | Open each Trash | Google Drive Help |
| Device and WhatsApp backups | Backups on the storage page | Google Drive Help |
| Hidden app data | Drive settings, **Manage apps** | Google Drive Help |
| Your files in other people's folders | Search `is:unorganized owner:me` | Google Drive Help |

**Files you own in someone else's folder.** If you created a file inside another person's folder and they delete that folder, the file is not deleted. It stays yours, with no folder, and keeps counting. Google's search help gives the query for exactly this case: `is:unorganized owner:me`. ([Google Drive Help](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375114?hl=en)) These are often called orphaned files.

**Hidden app data and backups.** Google says the "Other storage" category "often includes device backups and hidden data from apps connected to your Drive." To review app data, go to Drive settings and click **Manage apps**. Backups are under **Backups** on the storage page. WhatsApp backups on Android count toward your Google storage too. ([Google Drive Help](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/6374270?hl=en))

## How do you free up space on Google Drive?

Work from the largest category down and review before you delete. Google calls emptying the trash "the quickest way to recover space," but emptying it is permanent, so do it last.

### Step 1: Open the storage breakdown

Go to [one.google.com/storage/management](https://one.google.com/storage/management) and note which of Drive, Gmail and Photos is largest. Start there.

### Step 2: Sort Drive by size

In Drive, click **Storage** in the left-hand menu. The largest files are at the top. A handful of videos, disk images or old exports usually account for most of the space. Move them to the trash, or download a copy first if you want to keep one offline.

### Step 3: Clear large Gmail attachments

Google suggests these searches in the Gmail search bar ([Google Drive Help](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/6374270?hl=en)):

```
has:attachment larger:10M
filename:.pdf larger:5M
older_than:2y has:attachment
```

Select the messages you no longer need and click **Delete**. If you need an attachment kept, save it to Drive or your computer first. If you are looking for one particular file first, see how to [find old email attachments](https://thedrive.ai/blog/how-to-find-old-email-attachment).

### Step 4: Remove duplicates

Drive has no duplicate finder. Google's own advice is to sort a folder by name and look for files ending in "(1)" or starting with "Copy of." Copies saved under different names need a checksum match. [How to find duplicate files in Google Drive](https://thedrive.ai/blog/find-duplicate-files-google-drive) covers both methods.

### Step 5: Check backups, app data and unorganized files

Delete backups you no longer need under **Backups** on the storage page. Google warns that deleting a backup is permanent. Review **Manage apps** in Drive settings. Search `is:unorganized owner:me` and either file what you find into a folder or trash it.

### Step 6: Empty the trash in Drive, Gmail and Photos

Only now empty the three trash folders. Then wait: Google says to "allow time (up to 48–72 hours) for your storage to update after deleting multiple files at once." ([Google Drive Help](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/6374270?hl=en))

## How do you get a deleted file back?

Restore it from the trash before it is emptied. In Drive, open **Trash**, right-click the file and choose **Restore**. Google says files "remain in Trash for 30 days, then they're deleted forever," and emptying the trash deletes them permanently at once. ([Google Drive Help](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/1716222?hl=en))

That is why the order above matters. Everything you remove in steps 2 to 5 sits in a trash folder you can still restore from. Emptying the trash is the one step you cannot take back on your own. If you are cleaning a shared or work Drive, [undoing a bulk change in Google Drive](https://thedrive.ai/blog/undo-bulk-move-google-drive-onedrive-dropbox) covers what else can and cannot be reversed.

## Why is Google Drive storage still full after deleting?

Usually for one of two reasons. The files went to the trash, where they still count until it is emptied. Or the storage figure has not caught up yet: Google allows up to 48 to 72 hours after a large deletion. If it is still full after that, the space is in Gmail, Photos, backups or app data, not in the Drive files you deleted.

## What happens when Google storage is full?

New things stop arriving. Per Google, when you are over your quota you can't upload new files to Drive, you can't back up photos and videos to Google Photos, and "your ability to send and receive email in Gmail can be impacted." Files already stored stay where they are, for now. ([Google One Help](https://support.google.com/googleone/answer/9312312?hl=en))

The longer risk is deletion. Google says that if you are over quota for 2 years or longer, your content in Gmail, Photos and Drive may be removed. It says it will give at least 3 months' notice and a chance to buy storage or remove files first.

If cleaning up is not enough, the alternative is more storage through Google One, shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos. Plan sizes and prices are in our guide to [Google Drive pricing](https://thedrive.ai/blog/google-drive-pricing).

## How does The Drive AI find what is taking up space?

On a large or messy Drive, the native **Storage** list shows the biggest files but not where they cluster. [The Drive AI's file agent](https://thedrive.ai/blog/drive-ai-file-agent-v2) answers that as one request in a connected Google Drive:

```
What is taking up the most space in /Projects? Show the 20 largest files and how much space they use in total.
```

What it does, and does not do:

- **Finds and totals.** It finds files anywhere under a folder by type, size or date, counts the matches and their total size, and shows the largest. It can also summarize a whole folder: file counts, bytes, file types and date range.
- **Finds identical duplicates** by Google's own MD5 checksum, and lists look-alikes separately to compare. Native Google Docs, Sheets and Slides have no checksum, so they are never matched as duplicates.
- **Shows one plan before anything moves.** Any removal is a single change you approve, and it can be undone.
- **Uses Google's trash.** Removed files go to Drive's trash, so they still count against your storage until you empty it. That part stays in your hands.

It works on the files in Drive. It does not clear Gmail, Google Photos, backups or app data, so steps 3, 5 and 6 above still apply. Working in a connected Google Drive needs a Max or Team plan. The same tools also work in OneDrive, SharePoint, Dropbox and local folders, for example to [find duplicate files in OneDrive](https://thedrive.ai/blog/find-duplicate-files-onedrive) or [find duplicate files in Dropbox](https://thedrive.ai/blog/find-duplicate-files-dropbox).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why is my Google Drive storage full but empty?

Your 15 GB is shared by Drive, Gmail and Google Photos, so mail attachments and photos can fill it while Drive looks empty. Trashed files, device backups, hidden app data and files you own in other people's folders also count. Open the storage page at one.google.com/storage/management to see which service holds the space.

### How do I see what is taking up space on my Google Drive?

In Drive, click Storage in the left-hand menu. Google lists your files from largest to smallest, so the biggest space users are at the top. For the split between Drive, Gmail and Photos, use the storage manager at one.google.com/storage/management, which is free with any Google Account.

### Does emptying the trash free up space on Google Drive?

Yes. Files in the trash keep counting against your storage until they are permanently deleted, either when you empty the trash or automatically after 30 days. Emptying is permanent, so restore anything you need first. Google says storage can take up to 48 to 72 hours to update after a large deletion.

### What happens if my Google storage is full?

You can't upload new files to Drive or back up photos and videos to Google Photos, and Google says sending and receiving Gmail can be impacted. If you stay over quota for 2 years or longer, Google may remove your content, after at least 3 months' notice.

### How do I free up Google Drive space without losing data?

Download or move anything you want to keep before deleting it, delete in batches, and leave the trash unemptied for a while. Anything in the trash can be restored for 30 days. Empty it only once you are sure nothing in it is needed, since that step is permanent.

Most full Google accounts are fixed by a few large files, a heavy inbox or a photo library, and Google's own storage page shows which. If your Drive is large enough that the list stops helping, [ask The Drive AI](https://thedrive.ai/ask?prompt=Show+me+the+20+largest+files+in+this+workspace+and+how+much+space+they+take+up+in+total.&from=blog-google-drive-storage-full) where the space went, and approve the cleanup before anything moves.
