# Can Claude Rename Files?

> **TL;DR:** Yes. Claude can rename files in Google Drive and in work OneDrive and SharePoint through Anthropic's connectors, in local folders through Cowork, and on your own computer through Claude Code. In the cloud it renames one file per action, asking before each by default, and it has no undo for a batch. It names well because it can read each file first. To rename a whole folder from what each file says, as one change you can check and reverse, add a file agent such as The Drive AI to Claude, or ask it directly.

People ask this because renaming is the job nobody does by hand. A folder of `Scan_0043.pdf` files already has the right name for every file printed on its first page. Claude can read that page. The question is whether it can then do something about it, and on which of the places your files live.

The answer depends on where the files are. Here is each one.

## Can Claude rename files in Google Drive?

Yes. Anthropic's Google Drive connector, which you switch on from the + menu under Connectors, includes a tool that updates a file's title. That is how it renames, and the same tool moves a file by changing its folder. ([Claude Help Center](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10166901-use-google-workspace-connectors))

By default Claude asks for your approval before each change. Renaming 12 files means 12 approvals, unless your plan's owner has allowed members to let changes run without asking. Renaming in place keeps the file's ID, so shared links keep working.

What it does not do: rename many files in one action, or undo a set of renames. If it renames 80 scans and you dislike the pattern, you ask it to rename them back one by one, while the conversation still remembers the old names.

Setup, admin settings and fixes for the connector are on [Claude and Google Drive: setup, limits and fixes](https://thedrive.ai/claude/google-drive).

## Can Claude rename files in OneDrive and SharePoint?

For work and school accounts, yes. Anthropic's Microsoft 365 connector has a rename tool that keeps the item's ID, so existing sharing links keep working. It is read-only until an admin turns on its write tools, and personal OneDrive accounts are not supported at all. ([Claude Help Center](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12542951-set-up-the-microsoft-365-connector))

Like the Google Drive connector, it changes one item per action. More on setup and the admin approval it needs: [Claude and OneDrive](https://thedrive.ai/claude/onedrive) and [Claude and SharePoint](https://thedrive.ai/claude/sharepoint).

## Can Claude rename files in Dropbox?

Through the Dropbox connector, which Dropbox builds for Claude, the tool list includes move and copy but no separate rename. In Dropbox's own API a rename is a move to a new name in the same folder, so asking Claude to rename a file is handled as a move. ([Claude connectors directory](https://claude.com/connectors/dropbox)) It works one file per action. See [Claude and Dropbox](https://thedrive.ai/claude/dropbox).

## Can Claude Cowork rename files?

Yes, in the local folders you connect to it. Cowork reads and writes files in folders you give it access to, through the Claude desktop app while it is open, and asks before permanent deletes. ([Claude Help Center](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/13345190-get-started-with-claude-cowork)) Renaming a few hundred files on your own disk is a job it handles well.

Two cautions. Point it at a real local folder, not a synced Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox folder: users report read failures and, in one case, overwritten files when Cowork worked inside cloud-synced folders with online-only files. And check the result before you sync it anywhere, since there is no undo for a batch.

## Can Claude Code rename files?

Yes. Claude Code runs in a terminal on your computer and renames files with ordinary shell commands, or writes a short script for a large batch. It asks before running commands unless you have allowed them. This is the most flexible option for files on your own disk, and a script you can read before it runs is a good habit for anything over a few dozen files.

For files in a cloud drive, Claude Code uses the same connectors as claude.ai, or any MCP server you add. A worked example: [sort a folder of files by client and year with Claude Code](https://thedrive.ai/blog/sort-files-by-client-and-year-with-claude-code).

## What about Claude without any connector?

Without a connector, Claude cannot touch your files. It can still help: upload a handful of documents and ask for a name for each, or paste a file list and ask for a rename script you run yourself.

## Where Claude's renaming stops

| Job | Claude's own connectors | Claude with a file agent |
|---|---|---|
| Rename 5 files by what they say | Works, one approval each | Works |
| Rename 300 scans from their contents | 300 reads and 300 approvals | One proposed change listing every old and new name |
| Undo a batch of renames | Rename each file back by hand | One request reverses the whole change |
| Same naming pattern every time | Restated each conversation | Kept as a workspace rule |
| Personal OneDrive | Not supported | Supported |
| Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox together | Separate connectors | One folder tree |

The reading is the hard part at scale. To name a file from its contents Claude has to read it, and a few hundred PDFs do not fit comfortably in one conversation. An agent built for it reads every file into a table first (date, document type, sender) and fills the names from that table, which is also what makes the names consistent.

## How do you rename a whole folder by content?

Two ways, with the same sentence.

Ask [The Drive AI](https://thedrive.ai/use-cases/rename-pdf-files-based-on-content) directly, or add The Drive AI to Claude as a connector from [the MCP page](https://thedrive.ai/mcp) and ask there. A request that works:

`Rename every PDF in my Google Drive Scans folder from what is written in it: date first, then document type, then who it is from, like 2026-03-14-invoice-acme.pdf. Show me the new names before renaming anything.`

What comes back is the full list of old and new names as one proposed change. Nothing is renamed until you confirm, and if you dislike the result, one request puts every name back. Files with no readable date or sender are the ones to finish by hand; a blurred scan gives an agent as little to work with as it gives you.

If the folder keeps filling up, make it a rule rather than a request: a [workflow that renames scanned PDFs as they arrive](https://thedrive.ai/automations/rename-scanned-pdfs) applies the same pattern to every new file.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can Claude rename files in Google Drive?

Yes. Anthropic's Google Drive connector renames files by updating their title, one file per action, and asks for approval before each change by default. Shared links keep working because the file keeps its ID.

### Can Claude rename multiple files at once?

Not in one action through Anthropic's cloud connectors; each rename is its own step. Claude Code can rename many local files with one script, and a file agent connected to Claude proposes a whole folder of renames as one change.

### Can Claude rename files based on their content?

Yes. It reads each file and names it from what it finds, such as the date, document type and sender. For more than a few dozen files, an agent that extracts those details into a table first gives faster and more consistent names.

### Can Claude Cowork rename files?

Yes, in local folders you connect to Cowork through the Claude desktop app. Keep it out of cloud-synced folders with online-only files, where users have reported read failures.

### Can Claude undo a rename?

Only by renaming each file back. Through The Drive AI connector, one request reverses a whole set of renames.

## Start with ten files

Pick ten scans, ask Claude to name them from their contents with one example name, and read the results. If the names are right and the approvals are tolerable, that is your answer for small jobs. When the folder has hundreds of files, or lives in a personal OneDrive, run the same sentence through [The Drive AI](https://thedrive.ai/use-cases/rename-pdf-files-based-on-content) and get the whole folder back as one change you can check and undo.
