# Best AI File Manager Apps for iPhone and Android (2026)

> **TL;DR:** Most "AI" in phone file apps answers questions about a file. Very little of it changes anything. As of October 2026, none of Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box or Apple's Files app lets its AI move or rename files from the phone. **The Drive AI** does, across Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint and Dropbox at once, with a preview before every change and undo after. If all your files are in Google Drive and you want answers rather than organizing, **Gemini in the Drive app** is the simpler choice.

Disclosure: The Drive AI publishes this guide and is one of the apps in it.

## What should an AI file manager do on a phone?

On a laptop, organizing files is tedious. On a phone, dragging forty files between folders is close to impossible. That's where AI should help most, and it's the test we used. Five questions:

- **Does the AI act, or only answer?** Can it rename and move files, or does it summarize the one you opened?
- **Does it reach every place your files are?** Most people have files in more than one cloud.
- **Can you see a change before it happens, and undo it after?**
- **Can you talk to it?** Voice is the natural way to ask on a phone.
- **Does it read scans?** A phone is also your scanner.

## How do the apps compare?

| App | AI on the phone | Moves and renames from the phone | Clouds | AI price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Drive AI | Assistant: finds, answers, organizes | Yes, previewed, with undo | Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, Dropbox, its own | Free plan; $19.99 and $99.99 a month |
| Google Drive + Gemini | Questions about files and folders | No | Google Drive | Google AI Pro, $19.99 a month |
| Claude or ChatGPT | General assistant with a Drive connector | Possible through a connector | Google Drive and others | About $20 a month |
| Box + Box AI | Questions and summaries | No | Box | Business plans and up |
| OneDrive + Copilot | Questions about PDF text, iPhone only, work accounts | No | OneDrive | Microsoft 365 Copilot licence |
| Dropbox + Dash | Search and questions in the separate Dash app | No | Dropbox and connected apps | Dash from $15 a user a month |
| Apple Files | None built in | No | iCloud Drive and providers | Free |
| Files by Google | Cleanup suggestions | No | Phone storage | Free |

## Which AI file manager apps are worth using?

### 1. The Drive AI

An assistant you talk or type to, with your files behind it. Ask it to find "the lease I signed in March" and it searches by what files say, not just their names. Ask it to "move every 2025 invoice into Accounting/2025" and it shows you a card with the number of files and a sample of the new places, and a button such as **Apply 37 changes**. Nothing moves until you tap it. Undo reverses the moves and renames as one change.

- **Every cloud at once.** Connect Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint and Dropbox and the assistant works in all of them, in place. Connected drives need the Max or Team plan.
- **Voice.** Hold the mic and speak; your own file and folder names are recognized better than plain dictation would manage. [How voice works](https://thedrive.ai/blog/find-and-organize-files-by-voice-on-phone).
- **Scanner.** Up to 20 pages into one PDF, made searchable on upload ([how it compares with dedicated scanner apps](https://thedrive.ai/blog/best-document-scanner-app-for-iphone-and-android)). A workflow on the folder can name and file every scan; [scanning and auto-filing](https://thedrive.ai/blog/scan-and-auto-file-documents-from-phone) shows the setup.
- **Away from the app.** You get a notification when a task needs you or has finished, and on an iPhone a running task shows on the Lock Screen.

**Limits:** no share-sheet extension yet, so you can't send a file into the app from another app's share button; file contents aren't kept for offline use; on iPad it runs with the phone layout; voice is English only. A few things are web-only: placing signature fields by hand, editing a workflow's steps on the canvas, and inviting members.

**Price:** free plan with 20 assistant tasks a month. Premium is $19.99 a month, Max (connected drives, e-signatures, file requests) $99.99 a month, Team $95 a seat a month with a three-seat minimum.

### 2. Google Drive with Gemini

Since June 2026 the Google Drive app on Android and iPhone has **Ask Gemini in Drive**: chat about specific files or folders, with follow-up questions and history ([Google](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/06/ask-gemini-in-drive-now-available-on-mobile.html)). It's good at "what does this contract say about termination?"

Google's file-moving feature, **Organize my files**, became generally available on 1 June 2026. It suggests moves into folders and waits for your approval, but Google describes it on the web, and we couldn't find it in the phone apps ([Google](https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2026/06/organize-my-files-in-drive-now-generally-available.html)). The Drive scanner is good and can suggest a title for each scan.

**Price:** Gemini in Drive needs Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month, with 5 TB of storage) or a paid Workspace plan. Free Google accounts don't get it. **Best for:** people whose files are all in Google Drive.

### 3. Claude or ChatGPT with a Drive connector

The general assistants can now reach into Google Drive. Claude's Google Drive connector can create, update, share and trash files, and connectors you set up on the web or desktop also work in Claude's phone apps. ChatGPT's Google Drive app has write actions too, though OpenAI says what's available "varies by app and surface", and we found no confirmation that the write actions work on the phone.

These are capable, but they're chat tools first: one file or a handful at a time, with each action approved as it comes. There's no single preview of a 300-file reorganization and no undo for the whole thing. We compared them in detail in [AI file organization: Gemini, Copilot, ChatGPT and Claude](https://thedrive.ai/blog/ai-file-organization-gemini-copilot-chatgpt-claude).

**Best for:** someone who already pays for Claude or ChatGPT and needs the occasional file found or moved.

### 4. Box with Box AI

Box AI works in the Box apps on iPhone and Android: ask questions about a file, get a summary, with voice-to-text for typing. The scanner saves searchable PDFs. It doesn't move or rename files for you. **Price:** included from Box's Business plans up. **Best for:** companies already on Box.

### 5. OneDrive with Copilot

Microsoft's help page lists Copilot in OneDrive on the OneDrive website and Windows PCs, not the phone apps ([Microsoft](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/onedrive/frequently-asked-questions-about-copilot-in-onedrive)). On the iPhone, people with a work Microsoft 365 Copilot licence are getting **Ask Copilot** on selected text in a PDF from autumn 2026. The OneDrive scanner replaced Microsoft Lens, which stopped scanning in March 2026 ([Microsoft](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/retirement-of-microsoft-lens-fc965de7-499d-4d38-aeae-f6e48271652d)). **Best for:** reading PDFs on the go in a Microsoft 365 company.

### 6. Dropbox with Dash

Dropbox's AI features are on dropbox.com. On the phone, AI search lives in the separate **Dash** app, which searches and answers questions across Dropbox and apps you connect to it. The Dropbox app's scanner works on every plan, but searching text inside scans needs a paid business plan ([Dropbox](https://help.dropbox.com/create-upload/document-scanning)). **Price:** Dash from $15 a user a month, billed yearly. **Best for:** teams already on Dropbox.

### 7. Apple Files

The Files app on iPhone has no AI of its own. It does the basics well: folders, tags, a built-in scanner, and other clouds shown alongside iCloud Drive. If you're handy with Shortcuts, iOS 26's **Use Model** action can be chained into a do-it-yourself renaming shortcut. [How to organize files on your iPhone](https://thedrive.ai/blog/how-to-organize-files-on-iphone) covers what Files can do.

### 8. Files by Google

On Android, Files by Google suggests what to delete (duplicates, old screenshots, big files, apps you don't use) and has a scanner. There's no generative AI in it. It's the right tool for freeing up storage, not for organizing documents.

## How do you choose?

- **Files in more than one cloud, and you want them organized, not just searched:** The Drive AI.
- **Everything is in Google Drive and you mostly want answers:** Gemini in the Drive app.
- **You already pay for Claude or ChatGPT and need a file now and then:** their Drive connector.
- **Your company runs on Box, Microsoft 365 or Dropbox:** that company's own app, and accept that its AI only reads.
- **Your phone is full:** Files by Google on Android, or Settings › General › iPhone Storage on an iPhone.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the best AI file manager app for iPhone?

For organizing files across several clouds, The Drive AI: it renames and moves files from the phone, shows every change first, and undoes it as one change. For questions about files that all live in Google Drive, the Google Drive app with Gemini is simpler.

### What is the best AI file manager app for Android?

The same two, for the same reasons. The Drive AI organizes across Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint and Dropbox; Gemini in the Google Drive app answers questions about Google Drive files. Files by Google is the best free tool for clearing storage on the phone itself.

### Can AI organize my files from my phone?

Yes, with an app whose AI can change files rather than only read them. The Drive AI renames and moves files in connected drives from the phone after you approve a preview. The AI built into Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and Box apps answers questions and summarizes, but doesn't move files on the phone.

### Is there a free AI file manager app?

The Drive AI's free plan includes 20 assistant tasks a month and works on files you keep in The Drive AI. Files by Google is free but has no generative AI. Gemini in Drive needs a paid Google plan.

### Do AI file manager apps work offline?

Not the AI part. Finding files by what they say and reorganizing them needs a connection. Most apps, The Drive AI included, keep your folder listings on the phone so you can browse while offline.
